ABSTRACT
Energetic homeostasis is a priority for all the organisms.
Therefore, it is very important to have an enzyme capable
of evaluating the changes in energetic status. In animal
cells, the AMP Activated Kinase (AMPK) is an enzyme
that regulates some metabolic pathways according to the
energetic status. This enzyme is activated during
exercise, type II diabetes, obesity and anoxia, and it has
been postulated as a metabolic regulator during abnormal
energetic conditions. This enzyme is a heterotrimeric
complex that is activated allosterically by AMP;
however, for a complete activation, it needs to be
phosphorylated by an upstream kinase, LKB1. There
have been found orthologs to AMPK in all the eukaryotes
analyzed so far, suggesting a high functional conservation
in the metabolic control.
