ABSTRACT
The postpandemic of influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 began in August 2010 and is expected to remain for many years, therefore, we describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of patients with influenza-like illness/acute respiratory infection treated in a secondary hospital. Methods: A cross-sectional study of epidemiological surveillance of influenza in a hospital. It was characterized by age, sex, health status, type of influenza and date of onset of symptoms. Analysis was by ratios of Wilson, Fisher test, Mantel-Haenszel and t for difference of means. Results: There were 124 cases of influenza-like illness/acute respiratory infection, the most affected age group was one to four years (13.70%). Sample was collected 83.87% of cases, of which 30 were positive for some form of influenza. The main symptoms were cough, headache and fever. Developing reflected dyspnea have seven times more likely to be hospitalized (p = 0.000000302). Pregnant women were six times more risk for serious respiratory symptoms (p = 0.1158). The overall mortality in suspected cases was 4.8% and influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 12.0%. On average, were four days to demand medical care and seven days for deaths (p = 0.01840). Conclusions: It is necessary to maintain surveillance throughout the year despite having a winter behavior and emphasize timely care in pediatric patients and pregnant women.
