ABSTRACT
Introduction: Cleft lip and palate is a craniofacial birth defect that is a pathology of relevance. The quality of life of these patients has improved with the advent of neonatal care units, closing techniques and multidisciplinary management.

Methods: An observational, prospective, transversal and descriptive cases of patients with cleft lip and palate who were born at the Hospital of Gynecology and Obstetrics IMIEM for a period of 18 months (2010-2011).
Results: There were 39 patients with cleft lip and palate, was 64.1% male, birth weight had an average of 2700grams. The average gestational age was 37.5 weeks, the predominant maternal risk factors were found to be similar to those reported in the literature.
Conclusions: The study shows that the lip and palate is a common defect Mexiquense population and represents serious disease sequel and complications involved and therefore requires highly specialized treatment
