ABSTRACT
Background: Most of elderly patients who develop colon cancer also have many comorbid diseases such as cardiovascular and lung, which increases the surgical risk and postoperative morbidity and mortality. The effectiveness of surgery in elderly patients depends on the security that is done, allowing patients to return to productive lives, improved life expectancy or at least not decrease with the surgical procedure.
Material and methods: This cross-sectional study (case series) in which we describe the results of patients operated who had 75 year or more for colorectal cancer in the Department of Coloproctology aged or more between January 2000 and December 2008.
Results: A total of 49 patients over 75 year were attended, his presentation was higher in men than in women, the average age at the time of surgery was 80.9 years, the most common anatomical site of the tumor was the rectum, while the most commonly performed surgery was abdominoperineal. There were 8 postoperative complications, 5 of which were minor and 3 major. Three patients died secondary to the surgical procedure.
Conclusions: Curative surgery for colon cancer in elderly patients is well tolerated in them if they have an adequate selection of patients, considering the age at which they are to perform the surgical survival in this population is acceptable.
