Response to antibiotic treatment with azitromycine and tetracycline in infertile couples with Chlamydia trachomatis

ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine which one of azithromycin or tetracycline is more efficient to eradicate
Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct), in couples (man and woman) who deal with infertility problems.
Patients and methods: In the department of Biology of Human Reproduction at the Hospital of Gynecology and Obstetrics No. 4 Luis Castelazo Ayala of the Mexican Institute of Social Security, a clinical study was done in 80 couples who were dealing with primary and secondary infertility problems who had Ct infection detected by immunofluorescence under microscopy. Couples were selected in a random way forming two groups. The first one received 1-gram of oral azithromycin in a single dose, the second one received 500 milligrams of oral tetracycline during 10 days. Ct presence was search in samples of endocervix, urethra and sperms before and after treatment by immunofluorescence under microscopy. The statistical analysis was done by χ
2 test with the SSPS 18 program, considering a
p › 0.01 value as statistically significant.
Results: We didn’t find statistically significant differences in the bacteriological results between azithromycin and tetracycline. The average age in women was 26 years (18-38), and in men 33 years (24-48). We found an earlier sexual life onset average in men (18 years old), than in women (22 years old). The average of previous sexual partners was 4 in men and 2 in women.
Conclusions: The effectiveness of both antibiotics to eradicate the Ct infection in couples with infertility problems is similar according to the results of bacteriological cultures; nevertheless, there is a difference in cost and time. Azithromycin has a reduced cost and treatment period than tetracycline.
