Distal radius fractures in adults treated with the Pennig external fixator

ABSTRACT

A retrospective study of 27 patients with 29 distal radius complex fractures treated with the Pennig dynamic external fixator was done at the ABC Hospital between May 1994 and April 1998. Fourteen (48.27%) patients had an excellent result, eight (27.58%) a good result, four (13.79%) a fair result and three (10.34%) a poor result. Complications were rare. The immobilization time was four to 13 weeks with an average of seven weeks. The dynamic external fixation is an excellent treatment choice in the management of complex distal radius fractures.
