ABSTRACT
Since the first studies on amniotic-derived stem cells were published, much knowledge has been gained regarding the characteristics, handling methods and potential of these cells. A lot of preclinical evidence suggests that human amniotic derived cells may be useful for treating a range of pathologic conditions, joining the list of significant contributors to regenerative medicine. Whether the beneficial effects of amniotic derived cells are due to differentiation of the transplanted cells themselves or to paracrine actions on the surrounding host tissue in order to reduce inflammation and promote regeneration remains to be fully elucidated. In making new cell therapy-based strategies a clinical reality, it is fundamental a close collaboration between basic scientists and clinicians.
