ABSTRACT
Maize (
Zea mays L.) is one of the most important crops in the world, while corn borers (
Ostrinia nubilalis Hüb. and
Sesamia nonagrioides Lef.) are the biotic factor that more losses cause on its production. Classical breeding is an effective and widely used alternative for controlling damage caused by this pest. Developing effective breeding programs requires the understanding of resistance strategies underlined by the pest. Among the different maize constitutive defense mechanisms the cell wall structure and composition have been a rising scientific interest in the last years. There is evidence that cross linking between cell wall polymers through diferulates plays a key role in maize resistance to corn borers. The present work reviews the current knowledge on maize cell wall structure and composition as a defense mechanism against corn borers.
