Neonatal sepsis and meningitis produced by Streptococcus pneumoniae

ABSTRACT

In spite of the recent advances in the treatment of neonatal bacterial meningitis, morbimortality continues to be high. The etiology of the neonatal bacterial meningitis is predominantly related to Gram negative bacteria. Before 1987 Heamophilus influenzae type b was the bacteria most frequently responsible for childhood meningitis under 11 months of age, and it was reduced 90% with de Hib vaccine. We present the case of a newborn that displayed typical clinical manifestations of sepsis and neonatal meningitis. The spinal tap demonstrated the presence of Streptococcus pneumoniae.
