ABSTRACT
Since the invention of endoscopic surgery, changes in general surgery have appeared constantly in order to achieve effectiveness and quality in surgical care but in a less traumatic fashion. In some surgical fields endoscopic procedures have reached the “gold standard”, but in some others controversy still exist. This has been the case of minimally invasive procedures in colon cancer. Today, evidence supports the fact that this disease can be treated by endoscopic surgery. This paper summarizes some of the most important studies related to the theme as well as some of the concepts and conclusions of the experts opinion conference on colonic cancer by laparoscopy during the 8th International Congress of the European Association for Endoscopic Surgery, Nice, France 2000.
