Quality of life and lymphedema

ABSTRACT

Introduction: lymphedema is a chronic pathology of universal distribution, with great psychosocial repercussion. The evaluation of the quality of life in chronic patients plays a central role in health sciences, hence the assessment of this disease is vital in the assistance process.
Objectives: to introduce the aspect "Quality of Life" in the evaluation of the patients with lymphedema, and to estimate the impact of this illness on the quality of life of these patients.
Methods: A random sample of 346 people aged over 18 years, which roughly represents the estimated population of Cerro municipality according to EPI-Info statistical package (95 % CI), was used for the study. Mentally-disturbed were excluded. After peripheral vascular check-up, two groups were formed: one with 16 people suffering lymphedema and the other with 330 people without it. Both groups were applied Questionnaire SF 36 and the final results were automatically processed.
Results: the group of people with Lymphedema showed lower average qualifications in the eight dimensions of this test. These differences were more remarkable in six dimensions, which set statistical difference between the groups and indicated that there was direct implication of the disease in detriment of the quality of life.
Conclusion: lymphedema, as a chronic pathology, brings about reduction of the quality of life of the patients evaluated in this study.
