ABSTRACT
Objective: to characterize the peripheral vascular pathology in the primary health care level in Cienfuegos municipality. Methods: there were studied 2 580 patients who attended the angiology and vascular surgery service during one year from seven health areas in Cienfuegos municipality. All of them were questioned and were performed physical and vascular exam, in addition to administering a survey covering the following variables: age, sex, health area, diagnosis at arrival and at exit, and classification of referral (coincident or non-coincident).
Results: the rate of prevalence of vascular pathology was 125, 5 × 10 000 inhabitants and highest rates corresponded to venous pathology (77.9 %; n= 1 216) whereas the arterial, lymphatic, and diabetic pathology showed the same proportions. The venous diseases were more frequent from 40 to 50 years of age. Females predominated over males. Diagnostic coincidence was not found in 71.8 % (n= 1 408) of cases when comparing the diagnosis at arrival and that of discharge.
Conclusions: Females and venous pathology are predominant in the sample. Poor knowledge and thus inadequate management of vascular diseases are evidents in patients in the primary health care in Cienfuegos municipality.
