ABSTRACT
Intrahepatic cholestasis is the most common liver disease that occurs during pregnancy, was originally described in 1883 by Ahlfeld. It has a higher incidence during the third gestational trimester. One of its characteristics is the presence of a severe pruritus and alteration on the liver functions, it carries a moderate risk of preterm labor or still births, the symptoms disappear within days of delivery but it remains an important problem for the obstetric community. The cause of this pathology has not yet been determined but it has been associated with genetic, hormonal and even environmental factors. Treatment is based solely in diminishing the symptoms in patients and the use of ursodeoxicolic acid is the pharmacologic treatment proven more effective to date. This is based in the analysis of literature and clinical trials of such an important and not well unknown pathology. (4).
