ABSTRACT
The decision-making process in health care, at the individual and societal level, requires several elements to assure quality, one of these is the availability of the products of biomedical scientific research, publications that have reached maximal historical levels. One of the most important solutions to the problem of the great number of scientific papers published in the area of health care, is the production of systematic reviews of the literature on health care interventions, since these type of reviews are designed to decrease the existing bias inherent in traditional synthesis of medical information (narrative reviews). The Cochrane Collaboration is a worldwide organization, named in honor of the british epidemiologist Archie Cochrane, that has as its core mission the preparation, updating and dissemination of systematic reviews of the most effective health care interventions; its most visible product is the Cochrane Library, a collection of databases that is available in electronic format. A brief historical overview of the origin of the Collaboration is presented, as well as a discussion of its mission, methodology and current challenges worldwide. The beginnings and initial products and plans of the Cochrane Collaboration in Mexico are discussed.
