ABSTRACT
Objective: The aim of this paper is to offer an other alternative for groin hernia repair.
Material and methods: From April 1986 to April 1996. 312 groin hernia repairs were performed with a synthetic mesh (polypropylene). 271 were primary and 41 were recurrent. All were direct hernias. Under Gilbert’s classification. We prefer a Cooper ligament and iliopubic tract repair from an anterior approach, using a synthetic mesh inlay.
Results: There was one recurrence (0.32%) in a patient who was operated from prostate by about 28 months after hernioplasty and a transuretral prostatic resection. 8 seromas and 9 hematomas (5.29%). The patients were followed for an average of 5 years.
Conclusions: We believe that our technique is an excellent alternative and this paper show it, but the prove of time, they will tell us which is the best groin hernia repair. We believe that groin hernias repair need some kind of biosynthetic material to avoid late recurrences.
