ABSTRACT
This document is a proposed methodology for analyzing food security based on the conceptual framework Sustainable Livelihoods (SL). The proposed perspective allows for analyzing the relationships among capitals (physical, social, financial, human, and natural) on a community scale and for domestic groups (DG), factors of vulnerability, structures and processes, and their results. The framework establishes a conceptual link between what occurs within the home and the mid and macro scales, thus stimulating analysis of how the life of DG is affected by institutional and political processes. In order to operationalize the analysis of the SL, we use participatory evaluation methods, interviews of key informants, and a questionnaire. The document is divided into four sections: in the first, we present antecedents to the SL focus; in the following, we review the theory behind it; then we carry out a brief description of the study area; and finally we address research methods used and highlight the importance of this perspective.
