ABSTRACT
Objective: to identify depression and the its level through the Scale of Beck in patients with Diabetes mellitus type 2 attending the Regional Clinic of the Municipality of Jilotepec, Mexico.
Material and methods: descriptive, cross-sectional and observational study. The Beck test was applied to 51 patients with Diabetes mellitus (DM) type 2, considering as a criterion of inclusion being a diabetic patient type 2 with more than five years of evolution, excluding women with symptoms of the climacteric and patients with previous psychiatric illness; fasting glucose samples were taken and files were reviewed to determine the control of Diabetes, as well as other variables such as type of family, occupation and education.
Results: it was found that depression is common in female (64.7%), in a range of age between 33 and 83; married 72.5%, glucose control from good to regular 66.7%, depression 41.2%, average prevailed depression in 21.6%, only severe depression was observed in two patients and they belonged to 62.7% nuclear families.
Conclusions: from all the surveyed patients 41 presented depressive symptoms, only two cases were severe, however, the results showed that there is no relation between the presence of depression and the control of glucose, because the 30 patients without depression, 12 had a poor control of glucose; regarding those who submitted depressive symptoms the number of patients, with good and bad glucose control, was similar.
