ABSTRACT
Background: Cervical cancer is early diagnosed by Papanicolaou, so it is considered one of the most successful tests. Studies about sensitivity and specificity of the Papanicolaou study and colposcopy have been made with varying results. For a better diagnosis, it is recommended to do cytology, colposcopy and biopsy.
Objective: To determine sensitivity and specificity of the Papanicolaou study and colposcopy in the histopathological diagnosis of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and to establish agreement of such methods about the histopathological diagnosis at Special Unit Diagnostic Support Center San Rafael, ISSSTE.
Material and methods: We performed a descriptive, retrospective and transversal study from January 2008 to July 2009. We collected 112 files from the colposcopy service with histopathological report.
Results: Average age of the patients was 44.26 ± 12.64 years; quadratic-cells tables were performed, finding a sensitivity of 88.1% for cytology compared to the reported 75%, and the sensitivity of colposcopy was 88.1% compared to the reported 83%, with a concordance of 78% for cytology and 84% for colposcopy.
Conclusions: Both methods are complementary and nothing can substitute the histologic study.
