ABSTRACT
We carried out a descriptive, retrospective and longitudinal study, where there were investigated 253 patients diagnosed with bacterial meningoencephalitis in the period from January 1st 2000 and December 31st 2008 in the province of Matanzas. The general objective was measuring the impact of the immunization made during the vaccination campaigns of the country, and describing some epidemiologic aspects of the bacterial meningoencephalitis. We appreciated a tendency to a progressive decrease of the bacterial meningoencephalitis rates, reaching very low values at the end of the period. The rates highest reduction was in the age group of less than 1 year old, 1-4 years old, and 5-9 years old. We concluded that the 1989-1999 vaccine intervention against the N. meningitides B-C and H. influenza type b, respectively, were related with the modification of the bacterial meningoencephalitis rates, and that the diseases caused by these microorganisms had stopped being a health problem in our country and in our province.REFERENCES
