ABSTRACT

A study in patients that entered the Burn Unit of the “Dr. Victorio de la Fuente Narváez” Traumatology Hospital of the IMSS (BUHTVFN) was carried out. Two groups were formed: the first one with patients that entered from 1990 to 1992 and the second, from 1999 to 2002, to determine mortality rate, massive burn mortality, the DL50 and DE50. The results were contrasted with those reported by the American Burn Association (ABA) and European Units. The mortality rate in the first period was 9.7% and in the second 5.2%; ABA reports 5.5%. The mortality for massive burn in the first period was 82% and in the second 27%; Greig in Spain reports 30.07%; ABA 26%. The DL50 of the first period was 49% and in the second 59%; ABA 64%. The DE50 in the first period was 55% and in the second 64%; ABA 70%. In children, DL50 in the first period was 59% and in the second 85%; ABA 82%. The DE50 in the first period was 55% and in the second 95%; ABA 85%. The current effectiveness of the BUHTVFN determined by the mortality rate, massive burn survival, DL50 and DE50, is better than what was obtained in the period of 1990-1992 due to reduced mortality and improved survival for massive burn and it is similar to what is reported by prototype units.
