ABSTRACT
The quantity of visceral fat plays an important role in the resistance to the effect of insulin in human beings and the influence subcutaneous fat could have in such a resistance is controversial. A clinical trial was carried out to determine if the surgical removal of abdominal subcutaneous fat by liposuction in obese women has an effect on the sensitivity to insulin. Two groups of six obese women each were formed. The control and study groups were paired in age and body mass index. All the patients were given an insulin tolerance test, at the beginning and 21 days into the study in the control group which did not have any surgical procedure, and after the abdominal liposuction was performed for the study group. The insulin tolerance test in the control group was 4.66 and 4.16% and in the study group, 4.49 and 5.56% (p ‹ 0.05). With this study we can conclude that just as visceral fat, abdominal subcutaneous fat influences insulin resistance in obese patients, and the removal of that fat through liposuction improves sensitivity to insulin and reduces risk factors in the insulin resistance syndrome.
