ABSTRACT
Introduction: the chronic immune inflammatory periodontal disease is one of the most prevalent today. Tobacco consumption is the risk factor which is closely associated to this disease.
Methodological design. A transversal descriptive study was made in patients with ages 15 to 29 who attended the Dental Service at CDI Boquerón in Maturín Municipality, Monagas, Venezuela from September 2008 to February 2009 in order to identify the frequency of the periodontal disease. These patients were grouped according to age, periodontal state and number of cigarettes they smoke daily in the particular case of smokers. A survey was carried out as well as an oral exam to those who agreed to be part of the sample; Russell' s periodontal index checked by the World Health Organization (WHO) was applied.
Results: there is a similar behavior of smokers and nonsmokers according to the evaluation of our sample results. The frequency of the periodontal disease is 100 per cent in examined smokers and nonsmokers. It was observed that those who smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day suffer from worse periodontal problems. Besides seriousness increases, what becomes clinically evident if we take into account the increasing use of tobacco. The seriousness of the periodontal disease and the number of cigarettes people smoke daily show a clear dose-effect relationship.
Conclusion: In our study we could determine that the intensity of tobacco consumption increases as the age of examined people does. In the same way the periodontal state of smokers vanishes according to the intensity of this practice. Deterioration of the periodontal state is more compromised in smokers rather than nonsmokers.
