ABSTRACT
Introduction: the relationship between the length of the upper lip and the incisal edge of the upper incisors is considered important because it strongly undertakes the aesthetic results of dental treatment. The existing information shows the need to assess different groups, to establish the specificity of the treatment plan. The aim was to evaluate the influence of the length of the upper lip on the visible portion of the central and lateral incisors in a group of Mexicans teenagers.
Material and methods: a cross-sectional, correlational and observational study was performed. 1258 teenagers were examined and 111 were selected with proportion of facial balance, all the subjects had maxillary teeth present without dental anomalies and normal occlusion class I. The length of the upper lip and the portion of the central and lateral maxillary teeth that were visible were measured vertically with a digital Boley gauge.
Results: in none of the visible portions of the maxillary central incisive (r=-0.117, p=0.22) and the maxillary lateral incisive (r=-0.161, p=0.09) analyzed were influenced by the length of the upper lip.
Conclusions: the length of the upper lip has no influence on the visible portion of the central and lateral incisor in analyzed Mexican adolescents.
