Reasons for to realize treatment of root canal at the Endodontic Clinics in one Mexican University

ABSTRACT
Objective: to identify the reasons to realize root canal treatment in permanent dentition in dental clinics at a Mexican public university.
Material and methods: a cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out in patients who were treated at dental school clinic between July 2003 and December 2005. As an undergraduate area only anterior a premolar teeth are treated. In order to evalated this study clinic statistics were consulted as well as the patients dental charts. it was included the tooth and root canals number and the main goal of the treatment. For statistical analysis, it was reported media and percentage.
Results: during the period, 819 root canal treatments were analized. The main diagnostic was irreversible pulpitis (n=487; 59.5%). The upper teeth treated mostly with a highest rate (n=633; 77.3%). The teeth with more damage were the central incisors (n=227; 27.7%). The upper left central needed a higher root canal treatment (n=112; 13.7%).
Conclusions: the main reason why root canal treatment was done, in the dental clinic of this Mexican university was due to irreversible pulpitis.
