ABSTRACT
Background. An important procedure for diagnosis and monitoring of cytomegalovirus infection is the use of techniques of
PCR either qualitative or quantitative. This technique is used when the results of serological tests are inconclusive or as a system for monitoring the antiviral treatment.
Objective. To determine the concentration of serum immunoglobulins type IgG and IgM, as well as the viral load by technique of chain reaction of the polymerase (
PCR) in subjects with an infection by cytomegalovirus.
Material and methods. A 210 plasma samples were analyzed from patients referred to the Laboratory of Histocompatibility which presented a positive value of IgG and IgM for cytomegalovirus. Plasmas were analyzed by the
PCR technique to determine the viral load for
CMV.
Results. All plasma samples tested showed a positive result for IgG and IgM anti--cytomegalovirus. Only 8.09% had a positive outcome of viral load with an average of 12,713 ± 24,761 copies/mL with a range 694-63000 copies/mL. Patients with a
PCR-positive results were matched by gender and age, and we found no statistically significant differences between them based on their average viral load or the concentration of immunoglobulins IgG and IgM anti-cytomegalovirus
Conclusions. Our results suggest that most patients with a positive result for IgG and IgM anti-cytomegalovirus display a latency process and very few of them show a replication of the virus that can be detected by the
PCR technique.
