ABSTRACT
Background: The measurement of Intraabdominal Pressure (IAP) as part of hemodynamic monitoring of critically ill patients has led to early detect Intraabdominal Hypertension (IAH) and Abdominal Compartment Syndrome (ACS). However, the measurement of abdominal perimeter (AP) is still used as tool continuous monitoring of diseases with focus on abdominal level. The aim of this study is to evaluate the correlation on the IAP and the AP in the critically ill.
Material and Methods: A prospective, nonrandomized study in Intensive Care Unit of Medica Sur Clinic Foundation. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation, in order to establish the degree of association between variables.
Results: In total, 110 patients included, of whom 17 patients were excluded, resulting in 93 patients for the study, n= 93. IAP values were directly proportional to the degree of IAH and ACS, but there was no correlation with the AP r= 0.058 in critically ill patients. The values obtained between APACHE II and SOFA had a correlation with r= 0.751.
Conclusions: The AP haves a poor correlation with the value of the IAP and therefore, should not be used as a tool for clinical estimation of IAP in critically ill patients.
