ABSTRACT
Advances in the cellular and molecular biology have allowed a better understanding of
the meaning of cancer. Many researchers agree about an orderly and sequential
occurrence of tumor progression in each of the most frequent human tumors, the
presence of "gatekeeper and caretaker genes" that regulate the sense of this
development, the adaptative nature of the mutations underlying carcinogenesis,
among others. It seems that induced genetic variability and genetic polymorphism
influence decisively the susceptibility for the onset of neoplasia.
