ABSTRACT
Background: A poor diet results in pathological conditions like malnutrition or obesity. Obesity is a public health problem that deserves preventive approaches by health professionals. Objective: To determine dietary habits and nutritional status of nursing students, and the relationship between their complexion and perception of themselves in terms of body weight.
Material and Method: An observational, prospective, cross-sectional descriptive survey type, a total of 133 students from the School of Nursing and Public Health at the UMSNH.
Results: The majority of respondents know what obesity means, 96% recognized the issue as a serious illness and a public health problem and know the main causes of this pathological state. However, more than a half of them agree not to have adequate food habits. Only 52% know how to diagnose obesity and self-perception with regard to its weight does not accord with reality and that 77% of them believe they have a normal weight and 15% are considered "weak" only 8% were obese, while making the calculation of their BMI was found that only 60% have normal weight, overweight 11%, 28% are obese, and only 1 student had low weight.
Conclusions: Although they know the concept of obesity and know that it is a serious problem, the level of knowledge among students is still not ideal, because it has not had the impact required to create awareness in them about importance of caring for their food, and it continues to be a mismatch between their body self-perception and reality.
