Prevalence of potentially inappropriate medication use in the geriatric population in a private hospital in Mexico City

ABSTRACT

Objective: To determine the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) in patients› 65 years in the Centro Hospitalario Nuevo Sanatorio Durango (CHSD) as defined in the 2002 Beers criteria.
Materials and methods: observational, retrospective and transversal study where we evaluated the records of patients› 65 years who were admitted to medical and surgical services in 2010.
Results: The prevalence of stating at least one inappropriate medication was 41%. The most common was to prescribe a single PIM was during hospitalization (38.7%) and less frequently three PIMs at discharge. The most commonly prescribed medications were: ketorolac (59%), scopolamine (9.45%) and digoxin (4.5%). Surgical services were the most reported PIMS. Of these orthopedics (66.7%), followed by surgery (62%).
Conclusion: The prescription of potentially inappropriate medications was as high as that reported in international literature and higher than the national average. In general, only a PIM was indicated, being the most prescribed ketorolac. Surgical services were most frecuently precribed PIMs.
