ABSTRACT
Facial palsy is a neuromuscular disorder caused by damage to motor and sensory pathways of the facial nerve, which causes a movement disorder in the facial muscles. Also, affects taste and secretions of saliva and tears. This paper reviews the types of facial paralysis, focusing on peripheral facial paralysis, describing the signs and symptoms, epidemiology, causes, diagnosis, course, prognosis and treatment. Despite the high incidence in Mexico, there is no information available to patients about this disease and its treatment. Additionally, it was developed a flier explaining in detail the disorder and includes a list of exercises as part of the treatment performed in the Laboratory of Facial Paralysis and Applied Psychophysiology, Faculty of Psychology, UNAM, aimed to improve muscle activity (μV) and increase facial symmetry.
