ABSTRACT
Introduction: Stromal tumors of the digestive tract are non epithelial primary neoplasms of stomach and intestine.
Material and methods: To review the files with histopathologic reports of stromal tumors in the gastric part of digestive tract between January 1, 1995 and August 31, 2000. The reports were stained with immunohistochemical markers. The system used was estreptavidin-biotin-peroxidase using diaminobenzidine as cromogen and the following monoclonal antibodies: (DAKO) smooth muscle-specific actin; S-100 protein; neuron-specific enolase, and chromogramine. CD 34 was not used due to unavailability at the hospital.
Results: Ten cases were reported; seven benign and three malignant tumors, nine men, one woman, with several localizations and symptoms. All were surgically treated. Patients with malignant tumors (three) have survived from 6-24 months with average of 9.5 months.
Stromal tumors of digestive tract are neoplasms that occur with greater frequency in men. To understand the histology, tissues must be stained because these tumors demonstrate high cellularity with areas of intermediate morphology. Treatment must be extensive and even aggressive resection.
