ABSTRACT
Background: The use of desktop computer produces something more than a simple pain neck, to use them per long periods and without the suitable measures, has been a discussion subject on the appearance of the symptoms. Magnitude of this suffering and his impact in society can to determine the proportions with statistic published in year of 2007, when it was reported that 63% of all the adults of the United States used the personal computer (PC), and is evident that the tendency increases.
Methods: In a prospective study, 300 personal surveys to employees of different institutions were realised, which include personal data, hours of computer use, place of work, antecedents of cervical injury or shoulders, the scale for the valuation of the cervical pain, the analogous visual scale (EVA), the minimum images where the survey one indicates the site of the pain (dermatomos of C2 to C8), and requirements for the use of PC.
Results: Survey 88% of use PC, masculine 42% and feminine 58%. The dermatomos C5 and C6 presented/displayed a 54% incidence. Relation cervical sort-injury (chi-Square P=0.011), age-sort (p=0.342), relation cervical EVA-injury (p=0.000), hour-sort (p=0.871), hour-injury (p=0.832), age-injury (p=0.801), EVA-injury (p=0.000), ergonomic injury-position (p=0.007).
Conclusions: Relation between the hours of weekly use and the appearance of the cervical pain did not exist and of shoulders, nevertheless the inadequate position has relation with the appearance of the symptoms, being the women most susceptible to present/display these annoyances. The most frequent location corresponds to the dermatomos C5 and C6. It is important to establish programs of labor health, in order to promote the correct use of the desktop computers.
