ABSTRACT
Dysmenorrhea is the most common gynecological disorder among adolescents; it occurs in more than 50% of menstruating women and causes absenteeism and impairment in the quality of life. The etiology (primary dysmenorrhea) is the most widely accepted on production of prostaglandins in the endometrium during the ovulatory cycle. Primary dysmenorrhea is diagnosed by exclusion when pain occurs in the absence of menstrual disorders such as endometriosis (13) and other causes (secondary dysmenorrhea). Treatment is primarily with NSAIDs, oral contraceptives and non-pharmacological therapy such as diet, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, acupuncture and exercise. Due to the impact of this disease on adolescents in their quality of life, it is important to know and understand the causes for appropriate treatment and help this population.
