Descending necrotizing mediastinitis: apropos of three cases and review of the literature

ABSTRACT

Necrotizing descending mediastinitis is a life-threatening disease for the affected patient. Recently, an improvement in its management has resulted due to better understanding of its pathophysiology and anatomical spaces in jeopardy decreasing its mortality rate. We must emphasize the importance of early diagnosis regarding septic processes involving oral-cervical and facial regions and the necessity of wide and early surgical drainage. Three patients of the South Metropolitan Service of Health in Santiago of Chile are presented; different evolution regarding time of diagnosis is emphasized and a review of the pertinent literature to date on of this matter is presented, considering the goals reached in multidisciplinary and suitable surgical management.
