ABSTRACT
Objective: The outcome of 11 patients treated for intestinal intussusception (10 ileo-ileal and 1 colo-colic), from 1978 to 1999. Material and methods: This was a retrospective descriptive trial. Age, sex, outcome, clinical manifestations, laboratory test, preoperative diagnosis, type of surgery and congenital abnormalities were analyzed. Results: 68 patients with intestinal intussusception, 11 of them were in uncommon segments (16%), 10 ileo-ileal and one colo-colical. The youngest patient was 2 months old and the oldest one 11 years old. Progress time was over 24 hours in 10 cases (91%). Vomiting was the most common symptom in 8 patients, pain in 6, and fever in 4. The type of surgery was Intestinal resection with termino-terminal anastomosis in 8 cases (72.7%). 2 patients had complications: one of them had reintussusception and the other one had intestinal sub-occlusion. Discussion: The progress time is over 24 hours in a high percentage of cases (90%), explaining the low suspicion of the diagnosis and clinical features suggesting at first instance surgical complications of an intestinal infectious process and or appendicitis. It depends on a good medical management of the intestinal segment, and an adequate postoperative care.REFERENCES
