ABSTRACT
Continuous monitoring of resources consumption is very important in intensive care, without neglecting the quality of care. The quality analysis focuses on three elements: structure (human resources, materials and infrastructure), the process (link to evidence-based guidelines) and outcomes (mortality analysis). With regard to the use of resources, the use of economic analysis is of great importance whether minimization of costs, cost benefit, cost utility or cost-effectiveness. All of these evaluate changes that produces a new strategy in comparison to a strategy of conventional, taking into account the evolution of the patient and use of resources. Likewise for a general analysis of use of resources in the ICU, there is a method of calculating relative that it can guide the cost-effectiveness of the unit, this corresponds to the one done by Dr. Rapaport in 1994 and recalibrated in 2007. Knowledge of indicators to assess the results and the use of resources are of great help from the medical administrative point of view, because they can be used to set priorities in health programs and draw up recommendations to improve the efficiency of Intensive Care Units.
