ABSTRACT
Malaria has afflicted the human species for millennia and continues to be one of the diseases that cause high morbidity and mortality, particularly in tropical areas in developing countries. Malaria is the most important parasitic infection, accounting for more than a million deaths per year worldwide. Malaria is caused by one of the four species of
Plasmodium that infect humans:
P. vivax, P. ovale, P. malaria and
P. falciparum, the latter posing the greater risk for patients due to its ability to infect erythrocytes of all ages, secuestration in microcirculation and its resistance to antimalarial drugs. Because of the increasing parasite resistance to antimalarial drugs and the increasing international travel, among other factors, the incidence of malaria continues to rise. This module describes the most important aspects of the parasite and the disease, including the life cycle, epidemiology and associated clinical manifestations. Finally, special emphasis is made on the various diagnostic tests, their indications and availability.
