ABSTRACT
The program kangaroo method uses the maternal lap as substitute of the incubators apparatus in the care of new born (NB) of low weight. Objective: To evaluate the feasibility for the implementation of the program in Hospital Dr. Adolfo Prince Lara, Puerto Cabello, Venezuela. Methodology: The infrastructure of the Hospital, welfare personnel, material and financial resources were evaluated. Sample: conformed by RN weight = 2000 gr., diagnosing itself pathologies associated, social layer of the family. Results: Of 1260 NB, 111 had low weight (8.8%), 38 with weight = 2000 gr. Distress respiratory was the more frequent associate pathology (65.78%), 81.6% of the families were elegibles for the program. The Hospital counts on specialized welfare personnel, but lack physical space and forecast of economic resources. Conclusion: There is an important incidence of NB with low weight in those who the program could be applied; nevertheless deficiencies in the Hospital exist that could put in danger their implementation.REFERENCES
