ABSTRACT
Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a disease primarily of infancy and early childhood. It is characterized by the triad of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and acute renal failure. HUS has been recognized as the most common cause of acute renal failure in the pediatric population. Studies have revealed distinct subgroups of HUS and have identified several etiologies for the disease. The distinction is important because the clinical courses and prognoses differ for each category.
