Analyzed variables were: maternal age, gestational age, clinical data, time of evolution, type of surgical approach, complications, maternal and fetal mortalities.
Results: Twenty four pregnant women were subjected to appendicectomy. Incidence was of 1 per 608 pregnancies. Average age was of 24 years, fifty-four percent of cases occurred during the first trimester of pregnancy. Complications were encountered in 37.5% of the patients, and the most frequent complication was infection of the surgical wound, followed by early loss of pregnancy.
Conclusions: Appendicitis is more frequent during the first trimester of pregnancy. The most frequent complication is infection of the surgical wound, and 66% of the pregnant patients with appendicitis were within the age group of 16 to 25 years.
