Distribution of primary bone tumors in patients at the Instituto Nacional de Ortopedia (1987-1998)

ABSTRACT
At the Orthopedic Mexican National Institute in Mexico City from January 1987 to December 1998 in the Department of Pathology, 6,155 surgical specimens were studied; among these 737 (11.97%) cases corresponded to bone tumors either benign or malignant. The most frequent tumor osteochondroma, were 296 cases (40.16%), benign giant cell tumors, 67 (9.09%), non-ossifying fibroma, 49 cases (6.64%), chondrosarcoma, 41 cases (5.56%), osteogenic sarcoma, 29 cases (3.93%), multiple myeloma, 28 cases (3.97%) and malignant giant cell tumor, 24 (3.25%). Topographic location and distribution according to the age and sex for each variety is presented.
