ABSTRACT

Introduction: dignified treatment given by nurses should be based on the respect for human rights and the individual characteristics, also by the complete, real, and timely information that must be perfectly understood by the patient; and finally for the kindness of the personal whom offer the service.
Objective: to assess the accomplishment of dignified treatment indicator given by nurses to their patients at different health centers in the State of Morelos in Mexico.
Methodology: a transectional study was carried out between October 2007 and July 2008 in Morelos. A questionnaire of dignified treatment designed by the Health Secretary was used. Patients and relatives attended by nurses answered the questionnaire. 564 self-reports in 39 centers were obtained.
Results: more than half of the health centers evaluated (64 %) were under the minimum level established as "acceptable". The variable Level of dignified treatment given by nurses was significantly associated with Number of nurses in the health center (-0.464), population of influenced area for the health center (-0.558); transmuting time from health center to the health jurisdiction offices (0.375); and The number of physicians working at the health center (-0.557). Finally, an association was found between dignified treatment indicator and Location of health center urban or rural (t = 3.43, p =0 .001). The means were for urban area 47.2 and 79.73 for rural one.
Conclusions: according to these findings, it is very important to initiate actions of training and awareness focusing on cognitive and behavioral processes among nursing staff.
