ABSTRACT
Background: Medical practice is linked to the doctor-patient relationship that makes professionals develop social skills such as empathy. The family core or the family of origin is the most important agent in the socializing process due to the time and intensity of its relationships. Many researches studies have identified gender differences, kind of specialty in the empathy measures within the medical population. Nevertheless there is not previous record of the interest of factors that involved the development of empathy.
Objective: To identify the relationship between family functioning and empathy to provide considerations on the need to include education for social and emotional skills in the curricula of the graduates.
Participants and method: Through a non experimental research 235 residents from the National Medical Center 20 de Noviembre (ISSSTE) were studied. We measured their family functioning perception and empathy using Atri’s Family Functioning Scale and the Lozano’s Empathy Scale. The Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to measure the relationship between family functioning and empathy.
Results: We found correlation between family functioning and empathy of r = 0.456. The comparison of measures in the demographic variables with the family functioning and empathy scales did not show significant differences (p = ‹ 0.05).
Conclusion: We identified high correlation between family functioning and empathy. Gender, kind of residence and academic degree did not show significant differences with family functioning and empathy.
