Knowledge, attitude and perception of residents of Gynecology and Obstetrics of ISSSTE about emergency contraception

ABSTRACT
Background: The contraception of emergency is used from the sixties in some countries of the world like useful tool for the control of the familiar planning, helping to reduce pregnancies monished and the practice of abortion.
Objective: To know the attitudes perceptions and knowledge of contraception of emergency of the resident doctors of the service of Gynecology and Obstetrics of ISSSTE.
Participants and method: A questionnaire on aspects of emergency contraception was applied to all medical residents in the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology in order to know the knowledge, attitudes and perceptions that have on the item.
Results: The totality of the doctors is in agreement with the contraception of emergency as a tool whereupon counts the medical personnel to avoid the pregnancy. The frequency of prescription of emergency contraception pills significantly increased from the first to the fourth year of the specialty. It was an increase of almost 20% the percentage of emergency contraception prescribed by year of residence. Knowledge also significantly improved and the perception of barriers that interfere with the prescription is significantly reduced. In contrast, attitudes about emergency contraception showed few changes.
Conclusions: The doctors must count on the academic basic foundations become attached to the effective standardization on contraception, sexual and reproductive rights of the population; with medical and ethical responsibility to carry out the necessary prescription on contraception of emergency in the different medical units.
