Prevalence of infections in hospitalized patients with diabetes mellitus

ABSTRACT
Diabetes mellitus prevalence is increasing around the world, including Mexico. Frequency of infections is higher in diabetic patients.
Objective. To determine the prevalence of infections in patients with Diabetes mellitus.
Material and methods. A prospective study was performed, in patient attended at the Internal Medicine service in hospitalization. Statistic analysis was made with the Windows SPSS V 15.0 program.
Results. From 373 patients that were hospitalized during study period, 106 were diabetic patients and 38 patients were infected. Most patients were from the seven decade of life. Urinary tract infection was the predominant infection in 51.3% of cases, pneumonia was observed in 21.1% of infected patients. Glucose blood level at admission had a media of 278.47±193.15 mg/dl.
Conclusion. Prevalence of infections was 35.8%; urinary tract infection was the most common.
