ABSTRACT
Insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) and its binding proteins (IGFBPs), have a very important role in the regulation of fetal growth. These protein factors are produced virtually by all fetal organs since early development and are powerful stimulators of cellular division and differentiation. The objective of this review is discuss about the physiological role of IGF-I and its IGFBPs during pregnancy, the regulation of the biological actions of IGF-I by its IGFBPs, and the alterations of this factors during the intrauterine growth retardation and preeclampsia.
