ABSTRACT
Objective: To identify the limits of viability, mortality and morbidity in very low birth weight infants in a Mexico City’s private hospital.
Material and methods: We selected 96 neonates with weight less than 1,500 g born at the Hospital Angeles Lomas. Associations and relative risk between mortality and morbidity with different studied variables were found and we determined the limits of viability of our hospital and the intact survival.
Results: The survival rate was 91.7% with an intact survival rate of 76.1%. The main risk factors for mortality were multiple pregnancy (RR 5.73, IC95% 2.11-15.58,
p = 0.006), male gender (RR 1.96, IC95% 1.59-2.40,
p = 0.022), and requiring advanced resuscitation measures at birth (RR 2.85, IC95% 1.89-4.29,
p = 0.005).The limit of viability for gestational age is 26 weeks and 700 g for birth weight.
Conclusions: The study was limited by a small sample and a high rate of multiple pregnancies. It is important to establish the limit of viability en every institution to define goals and to help ethical decision when not to resuscitate according to every institution’s possibility.
