ABSTRACT
Placental mesenchymal dysplasia (PMD) is a vascular disorder of the placenta, characterized by large placenta with cystic dilatation, and unknown aetiology, definitive diagnosis is done by histological analysis. Its clinical presentation is unclear and nonspecific, with typical ultrasonographic findings such as thickened placenta, associated with placental cysts and fetal or neonatal abnormalities wich include intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), stillbirth, fetal tumors and Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome. Prevalence is 0.02 to 0.2%; however, the diagnosis is underestimated because not all placentas are submitted to histological analysis. We report the case of a 37 year old woman followed up with ultrasound scans from the first trimester of pregnancy and a final diagnosis of PMD by histology wich resulted in a healthy newborn.
