ABSTRACT
Introduction: Neonatal sepsis is defined as a bacteremia with systemic signs of infection and hemodynamic alterations during the first week of life. Mortality can range from 2-50%.
Methods: The present study was designed as a case-control investigation at the Instituto Nacional de Perinatología. Comparison of the risk factors between both groups was analyzed with χ
2 test, quantitative variables distribution was analyzed with Kolmogorov Smirnov´s test and comparison between the medias was established with t Student. Odds Ratios were calculated with a 95% confidence interval.
Results and conclusions: Significant differences were found in the following risk factors: conservative active management, premature rupture of membranes, urinary tract infection, preterm labor, chorioamnioitis, and multiple pregnancies. The study permitted the characterization and establishment of the importance of the principal obstetric risk factors for neonatal sepsis development.
