ABSTRACT
Introduction. A significant number of the population in Mexico exhibit metabolic syndrome. For this reason, this program evaluates the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in a population of asymptomatic subjects and to determine its association with the different analyzed variables..
Materials and Methods. Of September 2008 to December of 2009, of pFrom September 2008 to December of 2009, prospective methods were evaluated for subjects between the 20 and 75 years of age, among patients being treated for reasons different from cardiometabolic diseases at the external Internal Medicine area of a second tier hospital. Previous informed consent, laboratory studies, and anthropometric measurements were taken, and a questionnaire designed for the study was completed.
Results. 204 total subjects were evaluated, as 138 women (68%) and 66 men (32%), with an age average of 58 years (24-75). One hundred subjects (49%) met the criteria for the metabolic syndrome. There were more women with metabolic syndrome (57% versus 33%, p=0.003).
The number of components of the metabolic syndrome had a direct correlation with the degree of nonalcoholic fatty liver, measured indirectly.
Conclusions. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in Yucatan is similar to those previously reported at the national level. Metabolic syndrome was correlated with the degree of hepatic fat infiltration, determined indirectly
